Believe it or not, this really is a day set aside to commemorate Breast Cancer and it was today. I know, it makes no sense to me either. Sometimes I just want to slap my head into my hands and mumble repeatedly, “Why, why, why, why, why?” Such a day as this is offensive on so many levels. Laurie over at Life on a Bike and Other Fab Things was the first to bring the post written by Cancer in My Thirties to my attention. It really is worth wandering over there to read her post titled “National No Bra Day and Breast Cancer Awareness Month — OR — Please Put That Pink Can of Soup Down & Put Your Bra Back On”. I’ve linked to it here. Cancer in my Thirties is a smart woman with a wicked sense of humor. She sums things up perfectly.
I didn’t really understand the ‘no bra day’ in relation to breast cancer awareness?… Off to check out Laurie’s post now 🙂
Actually, none of us understand the relation from one to another. It’s foolishness in the face of something that really is sad. October is a time here when everything is bathed in pink ribbons for breast cancer. The problem is that nothing actually goes towards breast cancer research. A lot of companies have caught on to that and slap a pink ribbon on everything from soup cans to garbage bins to football helmets. These companies then keep a large percentage of the profits earned saying it was to promote awareness. Your lucky if you don’t have that in your corner of the world!
In Australia we still do have an abundance of pink themed things (junk) at this time of year. And I often wonder what the point is of this ‘raising awareness’ if not just a money grab from companies hoping to cash in on people’s need to feel better about themselves. I’m not adverse to charities and raising awareness about important issues, I just think we need to consider the motivation of ourselves as well as the companies who have turned everything pink…
Could shed new light on cervical cancer… .
I don’t even want to think what we’d have to drop to support that !
